Over 2007 various trout casting courses will be held at different venues on both river and stillwater. These courses are either 2 or 3 days. The courses concentrate upon teaching and developing single handed rod techniques, with fishing included for relaxation. The courses are tailored to suit the beginner to the highly skilled

Fly tying is one of the great pleasures of fly fishing. To catch a fish on a fly tied by yourself adds something special to the whole experience. Courses are and can be arranged for all levels and types of fly tying, from small trout flies to fully dressed salmon flies. Specialist courses on tying Paraloop flies, of which Ian Moutter is recognised as the leading exponent, take place each year.

Fishing for Atlantic Salmon on the mighty River Tweed is an experience that should not be missed. Fishing in Autumn is the best, this is the prime time. When you take into account that the catches on the River Tweed have made the Tweed one of, if not the best Atlantic salmon river in the world, you know you have something very special. Fishing the River Tweed is a mix of great fishing and tradition and it is a combination of this that makes the experience unforgettable. Double-handed rods, big flies, spates, ghillies and fishing lodges are all part of this most special week.
The course date for 2007 :- 22nd October 2007 (arrive 21st October)
This fishing course does not include the accommodation. We do block book a local hotel at very reasonable rates and everyone to date has stayed there.

You arrive on Sunday 21st October and head home on after breakfast on Sunday 28th October. The fishing begins on Monday 22nd and ends on Saturday 27th (there is no salmon fishing on Sunday in Scotland)
The fishing takes place on the Upper Caberston Beat close to the village of Walkerburn on the River Tweed. The beat is double bank and extends for approximately 1.75 miles and is split into 3 beats, with 2 rods fishing each beat on a rotational basis (total rods 6). Each beat has various distinct pools and can be fished from both left and right banks.
The beat has one of the finest fishing lodges complete with toilet, kitchen, balcony and lounge/eating area, with wood burning stove. In addition Stevie Dickson, the water manager and ghillie, is one of the finest ghillies on the Tweed and has proven a great asset over the years.

Even the Upper Tweed is still a fairly big river and the flies used are on the whole fairly large. As such the double-handed salmon rod is the rod of choice. Please note that fishing is by the fly only and no spinning is allowed whatever the conditions, saying that, even in adverse, conditions we usually manage to winkle out a fish or two.
At this time of year the best results come from using sinking line techniques or at the least sinking tip techniques.
Most of the time the best method is to get the fly down in the water as close to the bottom as possible, there are times when there are exceptions to this, but generally this is the best approach.
So tackle is double handed rods of around 15 ft long, nice solid through action being preferable. Line weights of around 10/11 weight AFTM. Sinking lines and long fast sinking tips.
The flies used tend to be on the larger size, Cascade, shrimp patterns, Willie Gunn, yellow and black tied on tubes, waddingtons and doubles.
