Each Country that makes up the United Kingdom - England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - offers first class game fishing. The main game fish species found in the UK are Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, sea run Brown Trout (known in the UK as Sea Trout), Grayling and Char. Rainbow Trout are well established in many waters, having been introduced from the USA at the end of the 19th century. In addition to the usual game fish, it has become popular to fly fish for other species including pike and various sea fish eg. Sea Bass, Pollack etc.
There is often confusion about the difference between a licence and a permit, as these are often required when fishing in the UK, it is wise to be aware of the differences and the legal requirements. Firstly, a licence is a legal requirement that may be required to fish in the Country you intend to fish in. A licence is required for fishing in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, but is not required in Scotland. A permit is the document required to fish a particular water or group of waters. In England, Northern Ireland and Wales you will normally be required to have a fishing permit in addition to the compulsory Rod Licence. In Scotland you are required only to have a fishing permit. No rod licence is required for sea fishing.
In England and Wales Rod Licences are available from any Post Office or on the internet from The Environment Agency, if you intend to fish for migratory fish (Atlantic Salmon or Sea Trout) in England or Wales, you must purchase the Migratory Fish Licence. If you are fishing for trout, grayling or any other species the Non - Migratory Trout and Coarse Fish Licence is required.

In Northern Ireland fish species are referred to as either game species (brown trout, sea trout, salmon, arctic char) or coarse species (pike, bream, roach, perch, carp, tench, rudd and eels). Licences and permits are also split into these categories.
The Fisheries Conservancy Board (FCB) and the Loughs Agency of the Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission (FCILC) are conservation bodies responsible for protecting fish stocks in Northern Ireland. Both bodies issue angling licences in their respective jurisdictions and, on payment of a supplement, licence holders are allowed to fish in the other jurisdictions. For further information>>
In Scotland no Rod Licence is required, but a Permit will be required. It is also important to know that fishing for migratory fish (salmon and sea trout) is illegal on a Sunday and this also extends to trout fishing on some river systems.
