Salmon Fishing the Last Chance

backWinter Salmon Fishing on the River Fowey

Fishing for Atlantic Salmon on the River Fowey and River Camel in Cornwall offers something no other river can offer, that is the season, on these two rivers, extends through to the middle of December, that is 15 days after even the mighty River Tweed has closed. The season on the Fowey and Camel closes later in the year than any other river. The fishing is dependent on conditions, but when it is good it is great fun and who knows you may indeed catch the very last salmon of the year in the UK.

The course date for 2008 :- 6th December to 13th December 2008
This fishing course is fully inclusive of fishing, food and accommodation

Tackle and Methods

The neck of the Deep Run on the River Fowey at Wainsford in Cornwall. Fishing for salmon with Ian MoutterThe River Fowey is a multi-method river. Many anglers choose to stick to fishing the fly, but for those who wish their experience can be extended into other methods. Spinning and bait fishing is allowed, including fishing the prawn.
The River Fowey is relatively small and most of the banks are tree lined, saying that most of it can be fished effectively using the fly. Wading is a requirement, but on the whole the wading is easy, safe and non-challenging.
Tackle is single handed fly rods of around 9.5 ft long, nice through action being preferable. Line weights of around 7 to 10 weight AFTM. Sinking lines and sinking tips can be very useful. The most useful casts are side cast, snake roll, spey cast and double spey cast.
The flies used tend to be medium size, classics, tied as singles, doubles or tubes. Colour depends very much on the conditions.
Bait rods will ideally be 11 ft to 12 ft with either a fixed spool or centrepin reel. The bait allowed is worm, shrimp and prawn.
Spinning rods are around 10 ft long used with a fixed spool reel. All types of spinners can be used, with Rapalas and flying c's proving to be the most effective. ________________________________________________________________
