Cornish Sea Trout Adventure 2006

Report on the Cornish Sea Trout Adventure 2006

The bridge below the House Pool on the River Fowey at Wainsford Cornwall.2006 saw the 6th year of the Cornish Sea Trout Adventure taking place at Wainford on the River Fowey. Now just so everyone is clear, in the UK when we refer to sea trout we mean sea run brown trout that most magnificent and enigmatic of fish.
The two courses are arranged for the first full two weeks of June. We arrange to be there at this time so as to be on the water during a time when the early large fish are still entering the river and just the very start of the run of smaller sea trout, which enter enmass from the latter part of June well into July. As ever Paul and Irene Eliot, the owners of the Wainsford Estate, made the events most enjoyable.

The first sea trout for Guy Woodall (left) caught on his first night of sea trout fishing, also first time ever fly fishing, caught after just an hour or two of casting tuition. (Right) Andy Smith (son of my old friend Ken Smith) with a fine sea trout on his first night sea trout fishing at Wainford on the River Fowey Cornwall with Ian Moutter. Both caught on the fly.The Fishing this year the fishing proved to be challenging, (a euphemism for having to work hard for results). The River Fowey was fairly low, but far from disasterously so, and fish were caught from the very first evening, with Guy Woodall, Andy Smith and myself all returning with fish. For Guy this was especially memorable as it was his first time fly fishing and he was thrown in at the deep end after a small amount of tuition. In addition to Guy's relative inexperience, he wasn't allowed on to the river until it was well and truly dark. In heroic fashion he hooked and landed, without any assistance, a fine fish, a little short of 3lbs. And what was yours truly doing when I should have been there to assist? having a wee kip under a tree, only to be woken by the sound of approaching feet, a distinct air of excitment and and a mild voice filled with incredulity stating "I've got one". Great stuff!
Fish were caught throughout both weeks and, although not the best year we've had, proved at least respectable and again most enjoyable.
